Financial irregularities exceeding Rs9 trillion have been uncovered in Pakistan’s electricity distribution companies over the past three years, according to a recent audit.
The details of the audit objections were presented to the National Assembly.
Documents reveal that during the 2023-24 fiscal year, irregularities amounted to Rs5.145 trillion.
In 2022-23, discrepancies totaled Rs1.575 trillion, and in 2021-22, the figure was Rs2.785 trillion.
The auditor general submitted 111 audit objections for 2023-24, recommending action against 72 officers and employees.
Irregularities were identified in several distribution companies.
LESCO was found to have Rs110 billion in financial mismanagement, PESCO Rs164 billion, and SEPCO Rs221 billion.
KESCO reported irregularities of Rs1.164 trillion, while CPPA’s irregularities stood at Rs2.734 trillion.
Additionally, irregularities were found in FESCO (Rs40 billion), GEPCO (Rs66 billion), HESCO (Rs83 billion), IESCO (Rs32 billion), MEPCO (Rs13 billion), TESCO (Rs16 billion), GENCO-I (Rs68 billion), GENCO-II (Rs74 billion), and NPPMCL (Rs114 billion). The audit also highlighted 111 objections, leading to recommendations for the dismissal and disciplinary action of numerous officials involved in the irregularities.
